Rules of the Road
51Car Courtesy
Every one of us believes that we are free of prejudice, possess excellent senses of humor and are great drivers. Would that that were true!
Courtesy doesn't extend only to offices and homes. One of the most challenging locations for it is the road. But if you keep these simple driving rules in mind, you won't go wrong.
1) Your car was equipped with a horn so you can warn others if you are a danger to them, or they to you--not as a mouthpiece for you to express your disagreement with the driver ahead of you.
2) Trust the other driver's judgment. The person in front of you may have stopped to let an elderly woman make her way across the street with her infant grandchild. Don't assume the other driver has simply forgotten to keep moving!
3) If you honk at the person ahead of me, I'm the one who hears it.
4) Give the other driver a break. The car ahead might be slowing because the driver is lost or looking for a place to park. In the same situation, do you like to hear loud horns in quick succession behind you?
5) The left lane is the passing lane, not the place where you can drive as fast as you want.
I'll be adding to these periodically. Please feel free to post your own suggestions; I might use them (and please include a name or user name so I can credit you if so).
Safe journey.
