54The "Secret" to Successful Communication
Successful interpersonal communication doesn't have to be difficult or scary. In fact, once you learn the "secrets," you'll find it surprisingly easy.
Before you read any further, I'll give you a piece of communication advice you can use right away. It's simple, really. So simple that, at first, you'll think, Well, duh. But, please give it a second moment of consideration. Here it is. You ready?
No one sets out to be a jerk.
You knew that, right? But how often, in the course of your daily interactions, do you remember it? How often do you imagine your conversational antagonist telling friends or significant others what a dope you are? Hmm?
But that's the way it is: Virtually every person who has ever lived has believed him or herself a decent person trying hard to accomplish difficult things under difficult circumstances.
. . .At least, that's how I think of myself. How about you?
The trick, of course, is to stop thinking about yourself, and consider the other person's viewpoint. How? That's also very simple: Think. Ask. Listen.
